Discrimination Statistics: You Are Not Alone

Have you been discriminated against at work? If so, you are not alone. Unfortunately, despite the various laws and regulations in place to deal with the issue, discrimination remains a problem in workplaces across the country. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission conducted a study and found the following to be true about discrimination in the year 2012:

  • The EEOC received 99,412 private sector workplace discrimination charges in 2012
  • The most field charges were for retaliation (37,836), race (33,512) and sex discrimination (30,356)
  • The EEOC filed 122 lawsuits — 86 individual suits, 26 multiple-victim and 10 systemic suits
  • 1,797 total discrimination charges were filed in the State of New Jersey for the 2012 fiscal year
  • Texas had the highest number of total discrimination charges filed (8,929) and the highest number of retaliation charges (3,730)
  • In the fiscal year of 2012, in New Jersey, 596 charges were filed for race, 462 for sex and 228 for national origin
  • There were 662 charges filed for employer retaliation in 2012

These are merely some of the recorded statistics on discrimination for a single year in the United States. Truthfully, discrimination may occur even more often. Many instances of discrimination are subtle and victims do not always realize their rights are being violated. If you suspect you are being discriminated against based on your race, color, sex, age, disability or national origin, seek help from a competent attorney as soon as possible.
